You wonder if you should have handled it differently, and you start regretting it. The bitterness of these memories taints the sweetness of your coffee and pulls you away from the calm of the present.

This habit of not staying in the present, of constantly thinking and worrying about the past or the future, is one of the major causes of stress and anxiety.
When our minds are elsewhere, we’re not fully engaged in what we’re doing. We miss out on the joys of the moment, and our lives feel less rich and fulfilling. The constant stress of past regrets and future fears weighs heavily on us and makes us feel uneasy and tense.
We keep on thinking about what we could have done differently or have anxieties about what might happen next. We forget that the past is gone, and the future is uncertain and not in our control, yet we spend so much time dwelling on both.
Most of the mental health issues we’re facing today as a generation are created by our minds only.
This hectic and fast-paced lifestyle is already taking a heavy toll on our minds and well-being, and this habit of living in the past and future adds to that stress and anxiety.
Stress is a good thing to have, but only for a short period.

As I said, there are high chance you’ve heard about mindfulness somewhere but you might or might not fully understand what it means.
In Hinduism, the mind is often compared to a monkey. This analogy comes from the nature of the mind’s restlessness and tendency to jump from one thought to another, just like a monkey jumping from branch to branch.
In just a moment, your thoughts can go from thinking about what the professor is teaching in the class to all corners of the world and even the moon and the sun.
Sometimes you must have consciously noticed this and wondered, “What the heck am I thinking and how did this chain of thoughts start?”
This is the nature of our mind, to make connections and jump from one thought to another. That’s how we learn and remember things.
It’s also in our nature to think about what happened yesterday or the day before, and what’s going to happen next. But as we can see, this leads to constant stress and anxiety.
Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment. It’s the practice of paying full attention to what you’re doing, feeling, and thinking right now, without getting caught up in distractions or judgments.
It is a conscious effort to focus on the here and now so we can break the cycle of dwelling on the past and worrying about the future.
Mindfulness helps us to appreciate the simple joys of life, from the taste of our morning coffee to the beauty of a sunny day.
The other aspect of mindfulness is that refrains us from being judgemental or critical about our thoughts.

For example, instead of saying, “I will be confident,” you say, “I am confident.” This shift in language helps to reprogram your mind to accept your goals as truths. It moves you from a state of wanting and hoping to a state of being and having.
This type of language will help you tap into the language this universe understands best, of beliefs and emotions.
