Before I embarked on the journey of mindfulness and began making conscious efforts in this direction, my mornings used to be anything but peaceful or intentional. I would wake up with myriad thoughts racing in my mind.
I would not know which one of them I should focus on first. Or, whether they at all deserved any space in my morning routine. There was no mental clarity and it was adversely affecting my self-growth.
However, thanks to writing blogs for Sage and Sirius, I realised a structured and well-planned morning is the solution for my dilemma. Among many things that I do for my morning to be mindful and intentional, journaling occupies a special place.
It makes me calmer and in control of things when my mind is juggling with various thoughts.
What is journaling? It’s writing down every thought, feeling, experience on a regular basis. You can choose to write on a designated notebook or a physical or digital planner.
Journaling is self-expression, self-reflection, and self-awareness in an intimate and private process.
When it comes to journaling, you need new topics as you can’t keep expressing yourself on the same topic every day. Keeping a set of journaling prompts handy so that you can choose one based on your current state of mind is a good idea.
In this blog, we are going to provide 21 effective journaling prompts that help make your mornings more purposeful and also help you in your self-growth, both at personal and professional levels.

For Mental Clarity and Focus
1. Why Does My Mind Lack Focus and Clarity?
Sometimes, you may feel that you have too many ideas, worries, things to-do, and distractions. This may overwhelm your mind, and you don’t know which one you should focus on right now.
Having mental clarity is a great asset. To achieve this, you can write down everything that is going on in your mind and circle those three things that seem most important, seeking your urgent attention.
It will help you brush aside non-essential thoughts and bring you to focus on your top priorities.
2. What Are My Obstacles?
Are you suffering from unexplained obstacles, fears, and worries that don’t allow yourself to move forward with confidence? If yes, you need to clearly identify them and think where they come from.
Write down your obstacles, fears and anxieties. The moment you have them on your planner, you will notice that most of your fears and worries are unfounded.
Similarly, either your obstacles will look without any base or you will find ways to solve them.
3. What Holds Me Back?
Many times, your mind lacks clarity because you are obsessed with a specific belief, fear, or assumption. This holds you back from giving your best and succeeding in your project.
Try to think about them and write them in your planner. Soon you will realise that your problem was not so big and insurmountable as you initially believed. You would be happy to find that they could be resolved with minor adjustments.
4. How Am I Feeling Emotionally?
Sometimes, you may feel emotionally charged or drained. You are unclear in your mind as to how you are feeling or what you should do to get back to a normal state.
You could be excited or disappointed. Journaling in these circumstances can help you see them more clearly. The prompt can be: How I am feeling emotionally now, and how I can get back to my normal self.
5. Are My Energy Levels Alright?
Mornings are also the time when you need to assess your energy level. For a morning to be bright, active, and mindful, you need to ensure your energy level is just right.
There are things that use up a lot of energy and leave you drained. Can you identify them?
Similarly, can you figure out what fuels your energy level? Write down all that leaves you drained as well as more energised. Then identify three of them in both categories. You will find your secret to an energy-filled morning.
6. Are My Mind and Mental Health Well Protected?
As you contemplate mental clarity, your energy level, and obstacles, you also need to spare a thought about the responsibilities and workload you carry.
Are you overburdened and overworked? Do you need to say ‘No’ to some of these responsibilities? Write down all that you do during the morning hours and identify the top three of them that you can remove from your morning routine.
Your morning doesn’t need to be fully packed with actions. You need time for reflection and lighter things, too.
