Do you ever feel like time used to move more slowly when we were kids? I remember when I was in school, life felt full yet unhurried. We’d come home after school, have lunch, and take an hour-long nap.
Later in the afternoon, we’d go outside to play badminton, football, or cricket. There was always time to have fun and relax.
After a couple of hours of homework, we’d gather around the TV for dinner and go to bed around 10 or 10:30.
Days seemed to stretch out long and we had enough time for everything. On weekends and holidays, we’d have entire days to ourselves. We could binge-watch cartoons, hang out with friends, and still keep up with schoolwork.
It was as if there was always enough time for everything. Even when I got to college, it felt like the days moved slower, with plenty of time to enjoy life, learn, and have fun.
But ever since starting my job, everything feels different. Time seems to fly by, slipping through my fingers faster than I can catch it.
Both of us have 9-to-5 corporate jobs, and some days it feels like we’re constantly rushing from one task to the next, struggling to find even a few moments for ourselves.
We’re barely able to find time for our hobbies and passions every day.
Think about it. COVID feels like it happened yesterday, yet it’s been four years.
I still remember the lockdown and the endless hours spent at home. Yet now, here we are in 2024, with the year almost over. How did that happen so quickly?
We’re living in a technologically advanced world that is dominated by all kinds of tools and technologies designed to help us save time, but ironically, instead of freeing up time, we’re busier than ever.
We’re expected to be more productive and to do more with the extra time technology gives us.
And because of that, we find ourselves caught in a cycle where there’s always more to do, more responsibilities to juggle, and never enough time to breathe.
Most of us dream of doing things like going on a vacation, taking up a new hobby, learning a skill, or just getting in better shape.
But how many times have you pushed those dreams aside, thinking you’ll get to them when life slows down?
The truth is, life never seems to slow down on its own. If anything, it only gets faster, and we keep trying to keep pace with it.
Take a moment to think about it – if we keep living like this, constantly rushing from one task to the next, we’ll end up spending our whole lives in fast-forward.
We’ll miss out on the little moments that make life truly special. But do you know the worst part? It‘s thinking that this is just the way life is supposed to be.
If this is the natural way of living, then why are mental health issues on the rise? Why do we feel more stressed and anxious than ever before?

We’ve become so used to this fast-paced lifestyle that we feel guilty for even taking a break. We’re always on the go, always worried that we’re not doing enough or forgetting something.
But by living this way, we’re missing out on the very essence of life. To truly enjoy life, we need to make a conscious decision to slow down and step away from this hectic and frantic way of living.
You might be thinking, “I have a demanding job, I live in the middle of a busy city, and my personal life is packed with responsibilities, how can I possibly slow down?”
Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to explore in this blog.
Let’s start by understanding what it means to slow down, then we’ll discuss 7 ways to slow down and live a simple life.

What is Slow Living?
Slow living is a conscious choice to live life at a more deliberate and thoughtful pace. It’s about stepping away from the rush of daily life and focusing on the things that matter most.
Instead of getting caught up in the constant hustle, slow living encourages us to be present, to appreciate the small moments, and to live with intention.
At its heart, slow living is about prioritizing quality over quantity.
It’s about enjoying life’s small and simple moments like a quiet morning cup of coffee, taking a walk in nature, or spending time with loved ones without being distracted by your phone or anything else.
It’s about going against the notion that we need to constantly be doing more, achieving more, or acquiring more to feel fulfilled.
Slow living also means being mindful of the choices we make. It’s about intentionally choosing how we spend our time, what we bring into our lives, and how we interact with the world around us.
This might look like simplifying your schedule, reducing clutter in your home, or practicing mindfulness to stay present in the moment.
In a world that constantly pushes us to move faster and do more, slow living is a reminder that it’s okay to take a step back.
Ultimately, slow living isn’t about doing less but rather about living more fully and deeply with a sense of peace and purpose.
Why Is It Important to Slow Down in Life?
In today’s fast-paced world, the idea of slowing down might sound like a luxury not everyone afford, but it’s actually very important for our well-being.
When we constantly rush from one task to the next, we miss out on the deeper and more meaningful experiences in our lives.
Slowing down enables us to reconnect with what truly matters to us – our health, our relationships, and our passions.
One of the most important reasons to slow down is to reclaim time for the things that truly make you happy. Think about all the hobbies and activities you’ve been putting off because you’re too busy.
Maybe it’s taking up a new skill, spending more time outdoors, or pursuing a passion you’ve always dreamed of. When we’re stuck in the cycle of always being “on,” those things take a backseat.
But when we slow down, we create time and space to do what we’ve always wanted to. It could be learning something new, getting in shape, or simply enjoying being around the people we care about.
Slowing down also gives us a chance to become a better version of ourselves. It’s not about being lazy or unproductive, but about finding balance.
When we give ourselves time to rest and recharge, we’re more creative, energized, and capable of handling life’s demands.
We start to prioritize our well-being and personal growth.
Moreover, slowing down also reduces stress and anxiety. Constantly being in a hurry creates tension which can lead to burnout and feelings of overwhelm.
By embracing a slower pace, we can breathe, reflect, and truly enjoy the present moment.
Life doesn’t have to feel like a race. By slowing down, we can live with more intention and meaning, and finally make time for the things that nourish our souls.
7 Ways to Slow Down and Live a Simple Life
Slowing down and living a simpler life is all about making conscious and intentional choices that will help you break free from the chaotic pace of daily life.
You don’t have to make any drastic changes but find and incorporate small and meaningful ways to shift your focus towards what truly matters.
Let’s take a look at some practical steps you can take to live a slower and more intentional lifestyle.
1. Practice Mindfulness
The foundation of slowing down and living a simpler life is practicing mindfulness, which is being fully aware of what you’re doing in the present moment.
In our fast-paced lives, most of the time our mind is either worrying about the past or stressing about the future. We operate on autopilot, going through the motions of our daily tasks without truly being present.
This disconnection from the present moment prevents us from making intentional choices that align with what we really want out of life.
Practicing mindfulness is the first step to breaking this cycle. It’s about training your mind to gently shift its focus back to the present.
Whether you’re eating a meal, working on a task, or spending time with loved ones, being mindful means giving your full attention to that activity.
Instead of rushing through things or letting your mind wander to what’s next, mindfulness encourages you to slow down, observe, and appreciate the moment you’re in.
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as pausing for a few moments throughout your day to take a deep breath and ground yourself in the present.
Notice your surroundings, your thoughts, and how you feel. When you’re fully present in the moment, you can make better decisions about how you want to spend your time and energy.
Mindfulness helps you reconnect with the little things in life.
You start appreciating the joy in simple moments like a quiet cup of coffee, a walk outside, or even completing a routine task with purpose.
As you become more mindful, you naturally start to live more intentionally, and that’s the key to slowing down and leading a simpler, more fulfilling life.

2. Cut Off Distractions, Especially Your Phone
In today’s world, one of the biggest obstacles to slowing down and living a simpler life is the constant barrage of distractions, with our phones being the main culprit.
With the rise of the internet, social media, and instant communication, we’re more connected than ever.
The entire world is competing for our attention and we’re constantly being pulled in a thousand different directions. Notifications, emails, social media updates, and news alerts take a lot of our time and energy.
The truth is that most of the information we’re exposed to through our phones is either negative or irrelevant to us.
We’re bombarded with news that doesn’t directly impact us or about things we can’t change or do anything about, yet it still adds unnecessary stress.
What’s worse is that we often find ourselves measuring our own lives against the perfectly curated lives of others on social media which makes us feel inadequate.
To truly slow down and simplify life, you’ll have to consciously cut down on these distractions. Start by setting boundaries with how and when you use your phone.
You don’t need to be available 24/7, nor do you need to check every notification the moment it appears. Turn off all non-essential notifications or even take scheduled breaks from your phone entirely.
Another way to reduce distractions is to create tech-free zones or times in your day.
For example, you can make mornings and evenings phone-free. Start and end your day with peace rather than digital noise. Instead of scrolling through your phone, use this time to read, reflect, or simply relax.
By doing so, you’ll be able to connect with the present moment, engage fully with the people around you, and rediscover the joy of living without constantly being pulled in by the digital world.
3. Journal Regularly
One of the most effective ways to slow down and live a simpler life is to start journaling regularly. Journaling allows you to pause, reflect, and think about how you’re currently spending your time.
Think about it, when was the last time you truly reflected on your day? Most of us are so busy rushing from one task to the next that we rarely take the time to think about whether we’re spending our time wisely.
Journaling gives you a space for self-reflection. You get to see how you’re using your time and energy and identify areas where you might be wasting both.
This simple habit of reflecting on your day helps you make conscious decisions about how to spend your time moving forward. You can cut out unnecessary distractions and focus on what truly matters.
Journaling is one of the best ways to practice mindfulness, gratitude, and self-care. It is also a very powerful tool for organizing your day, setting and achieving personal and professional goals, and manifesting your dream life.
Keeping all this in mind, we’ve created our own mindful living digital planner.
Both of us have been journaling for a few weeks now, and we can say from experience that is one of the best things you can do for yourself if you want to reduce stress, organize your days and life, and make consistent progress toward your goals.

If you’re looking for a way to slow down, reduce stress, and bring more purpose into your life, we invite you to check out our mindful living digital planner.
It’s designed to help you take control of your time and live more mindfully each day.

4. Build Meaningful Connections
As human beings, we need meaningful connections with other people to thrive. We need to have a strong community around us that can uplift, support, and give us a sense of belonging.
We need people who we can share our grief and happiness with.
In today’s world of social media, we may have hundreds of friends and followers, but how many of those connections are truly meaningful?
How many people in your friend list could you actually open up to?
For most of us, the majority of our interactions online are only surface-level. We exchange memes or react to their posts but they lack depth.
True connection comes from being present and engaged, and unfortunately, we often find ourselves distracted, even when we are physically with friends or family.
Instead of focusing on the conversation or enjoying the moment, we’re busy scrolling through our phones. This habit can make our relationships feel hollow.
We must nurture the relationships that matter. When you spend time with loved ones, make an effort to really be there – mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Put away the distractions, listen with intent, and engage in meaningful conversations. These moments of true connection are what build lasting bonds and make us happy.
Rather than relying on virtual connections, prioritize in-person interactions whenever possible. Spend quality time with those who matter most, and be fully present during those moments.
5. Prioritize and Single-Task
How can you slow down when you’re trying to juggle everything at once? The truth is, you can’t.
One of the biggest steps in simplifying life is learning to prioritize what’s really important and giving your full attention to one thing at a time.
The first step is figuring out what truly needs your attention. Not everything on your plate is equally urgent or important.
Journaling can help you do this. You can make a to-do list of the things that need your attention, and then prioritize them accordingly.
Once you’ve figured out what’s important, the next key is to avoid the trap of multitasking. We generally think that multi-tasking will help us do more but in reality, it’s the opposite.
Our brains aren’t built to handle several things at once effectively. When you divide your attention, each task suffers, and it ends up taking longer to complete them.
When you work on a single task with intention, you’re more present, efficient, and likely to do a better job.
Don’t let yourself be fooled into thinking that you can multitask. Instead, slow down, and focus on one task, and you’ll find that you’re not only more productive but also calmer and more in control of your day.
6. Stay Connected with Nature
So many of us live in a concrete jungle, always surrounded by work, responsibilities, and stress.
Our days are filled with commuting in cars, buses, or trains, while our minds are racing with endless to-do lists and expectations.
Even when we’re outside, we’re mostly on our phones. We forget that we’re human beings and we need to stay connected with the natural world to maintain our sanity and well-being.
Nature has a grounding effect on us and it gives us space to breathe, relax, and disconnect from the hectic demands of modern life.
But with our busy schedules, we often lose touch with it. So we must stay connected with nature.
If you live outside the city, see if you can go for a short hike or spend some time by a lake or river. If you live in the city, go to your nearest park and walk barefoot on the grass.
If you don’t have access to nature at all, get some plants for your balcony and spend time there. Spend time tending to them, watching them grow, and use that time to slow down and relax.
Have your morning coffee or tea with your plants and let yourself enjoy those peaceful moments.
Make sure you’re not busy with your phone when you’re in nature. Don’t worry about what’s next on your schedule. Just feel the air on your skin, listen to the sound of the wind or water, and reconnect with the earth.
7. Make Time for Your Hobbies and Passions
Many of us don’t understand that doing things that make us happy is just as important as any other part of life. We often think that pursuing hobbies or passions is a luxury, something only the rich can afford.
Spending time doing things you love and that make you happy is a very important part of your self-care routine, something we all need, especially in today’s fast-paced world if we want to stay sane and healthy.
Play any sport, learn any musical instrument, join dancing or singing classes, start sketching, or do any other activity of your choice that you really enjoy doing.
You’ll find that it is a very cathartic process.
If you’re not employed in the job of your liking or something you want to do for the rest of your life, make time to work on your passion on the side.
Use your free time to work on what excites you and makes you happy. Eventually, with consistent effort and dedication, you might even be able to turn that passion into your full-time job.
Spending time doing things you love is a way to nurture your soul. It’s a reminder that life isn’t just about working and meeting obligations, it’s about doing things that make you feel alive.
Doing these things will make you feel more connected to the life you want to live.
